Summertime in Southern California is in full effect. You may not realize it, but the heat can actually be a threat to your home. The hot weather steals the moisture from the soil around your home and foundation, which can result in cracks. Reoccurring dry weather can create a foundation disaster. This may lead to foundation damage that can change the structural support of your home if you don’t address the issue. Protect your home before it is too late.

Not sure how heat can affect your foundation? Some causes include:

  • Shrinking Soil: Hot weather dehydrates the soil in your yard. The soil that surrounds your foundation is typically moist, but shrinks when dehydrated. The soil moves around and eventually stops supporting your foundation. The foundation cracks with the loss of support.
  • Foundation Cracks: If you’ve seen soil crack from dry weather, the same thing can happen to the foundation of your home.
  • Sinking Foundations: Foundation will crack and separate until it finds support again. The surrounding dry soil that is away from your foundation moves causing the foundation to move until it has soil to rest up against. As a result, parts of your foundation and house can tilt in the direction the foundation started to fall and sink.

Even if you don’t see cracks in your foundation, you can still have foundation damage from the heat. Leaving the problem unattended can make the foundation issue even bigger, let water in, and result in even bigger foundation issues and structural damage. Don’t wait until more problems occur. Calling an expert will give you a peace of mind that your home and family are safe.
